The recipient was Rita Holy from the STAAR (Seagoville Texas Animal Advocate and Rescue) volunteer organization that supports the Seagoville Animal Shelter.
The school’s donation of $3,106.76 represents about 10 percent of the shelter’s annual budget to feed, spay, neuter, and find homes for strays—about 400 this past year.
Common Cents grew from an idea proposed in 1988 by late Dallas philanthropist Louise Gartner. Every penny collected benefits the charities chosen by students, who also lead all the fundraising efforts.
Now in its 20th year, Dallas ISD students have raised and donated more than $875,000 during the life of the program. For the 2017-2018 school year, students raised more than $37,000.
